One-stop shop launched online for Maine job seekers and employers

Maine job seekers and employers can now go to a single website for information on free job training and hiring programs.

The one-stop shop is part of the Maine-at-Work Initiative, formally launched on Thursday by the Maine Department of Labor and other agencies. It seeks to educate people and companies about the range of free resources available and where to find out more.

Straightforward and easy to navigate, the site is split into sections for job seekers, including people considering a career switch, veterans, laid-off workers and people with disabilities, and employers, with clickable links to resources including their nearest MDOL CareerCenter.

“Maine’s labor market is tightening and our employers need workers with the right skills,” said Commissioner of Labor Jeanne Paquette in a statement. “Maine-at-Work builds on our successful Hire-A-Vet model by providing employers and job seekers one convenient, statewide point of contact to help people get hired and trained.”

The site went live in November, resulting in 64 referrals to the Maine Department of Labor, and is now being promoted through social media, radio and other channels.

Figures released separately on Thursday show that 146 employers who took part in the 2016 Hire-A-Vet Campaign hired 197 veterans during its 100-day run last autumn, between Labor Day and Dec. 13, 2016. Figures were collected in January due to the length of the hiring process.

MAWI is a collaboration between the Maine Department of Labor, Aroostook Community Action Program, Coastal Counties Workforce Board, Central Western Maine Workforce Development Board, Eastern Maine Development Corporation, the department’s Bureau of Employment Services, Northeastern Workforce Development Board, Western Maine Community Action, and Workforce Solutions.

Maine’s unemployment rate stood at 3.8% in December 2016, unchanged from both the previous month and from a year earlier, according to the Maine Department of Labor’s website. That compares to 4.7% U.S. unemployment in December 2016.
