Portland-based Ocean Renewable Power Co. has formed a new subsidiary to expand its tidal power work in Nova Scotia.
The company today announced the formation of ORPC Nova Scotia Ltd. to bolster its goal of establishing tidal power technology in the Canadian province, according to a press release. Earlier this year, ORPC partnered with Fundy Tidal Inc. of Nova Scotia to develop tidal energy projects in the Bay of Fundy. The companies plan to install ORPC's TidGen Power System in the bay and begin producing tidal-generated electricity in the fall of 2012, eventually generating up to 2 megawatts of energy to the province's Digby County. The province has allocated $750,000 for site assessment efforts of tidal power projects, and its Utility and Review Board also approved a 65.2-cent-per-kilowatt-hour tariff to be paid by utilities to promote community-based tidal energy projects.
John Ferland, ORPC's vice president of project development, said in the release that Nova Scotia's tidal energy market opportunity is 10 times larger than that of Maine. Last year, ORPC successfully completed beta testing of its tidal power system in waters off Eastport and Lubec. In 2012, the company also plans to install its first grid-connected power system in Eastport and its first RivGen Power System in Alaska.
