OTELCO plans $33M fiber communications build-out in 16 Maine communities

Telecommunications provider OTELCO Inc. is planning to spend $33 million to build out 700 miles of fiber optic infrastructure serving 52,000 Maine locations by early 2022, the company announced Thursday.

The company, which has operations centers in Bangor and New Gloucester, said the project will include two phases: a 240-mile build serving nearly 9,200 locations in Gorham, Windham, Gray and New Gloucester, and an additional 455 miles of fiber to serve 43,000 locations in a dozen other southern Maine communities.

The new fiber network will offer upload and download speeds ranging from 150 megabits per second to 1 gigabit per second, and according to David Allen, OTELCO vice president of network operations.

“With the future in mind, we’re designing and building our network with expandability so that we can increase speed offerings as people’s needs increase,” he said in a news release.

Southern portions of the project may be completed later this year, with additional builds finished in the first quarter of 2022, the release said.

Among the locations that will see expanded fiber-to-the-premise services is Biddeford.

“Biddeford is in an economic boom and OTELCO’s expansion plans will provide internet speeds that will make our community even more desirable for businesses and residents,” Mayor Alan Casavant said in the release.

OTELCO provides fiber-to-the-premise and telephone communications for residential and business customers in Alabama, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Vermont, and West Virginia. The company announced in April that it was being acquired for $106 million by Oak Hill Capital Partners, a private equity firm in Stamford, Conn.
