Work to redevelop the former Wausau Paper Otis Mill in Jay is advancing, as the last pieces of its paper machine are sent overseas.
Mary Howes, along with her husband, Tim DeMillo, purchased the mill in October 2009 with plans to turn it into a business and industrial complex. The couple are principals of Otis Mill Ventures LLC and also own Howie's Welding and Fabrication Inc. in Jay. Over the last 10 weeks, contractors have been dismantling the mill's paper machines for shipment to a buyer in India, as well as clearing out other spaces in the 650,000-square-foot building for new manufacturers, according to news channel WCSH 6. Little Bucket Co., which makes fire starters, has already moved into one wing of the building.
Otis Mill Ventures plans to renovate the exterior of the building this summer and also tackle work on a public access trail to connect Livermore Falls and Jay. In 2010, Mainebiz named Howes a Woman to Watch.
