Outstanding bond packages put on hold

The Legislature's appropriations committee expects to put around $1.2 billion in bond proposals on hold until January as lawmakers focus on inking a spending plan and dealing with around 100 unfunded laws passed this session.

The Bangor Daily News reported that there are 32 general obligation bond proposals from lawmakers and the governor that will likely be held for consideration until the Legislature reconvenes in January.

Those proposed bond projects include a $100 million transportation proposal from the governor, economic development projects and improvements to the Maine Community College System campuses.

Sen. Patrick Flood, the only Republican member of the appropriations committee, told the paper that members of his caucus are generally supportive of borrowing for education and transportation projects. Flood said the committee is also waiting now to find how much will be available in the state's next two-year budget to make payments on bonds, which could guide how much the state chooses to borrow.
