Over 100 communities closer to waste-to-biofuel conversion

The Maine Department of Environmental Protection has issued the final permits for a Fiberight waste management plant in Hampden, following a year of reviews and public input.

“We are delighted to have our state permits in hand,” Craig Stuart-Paul, Fiberight’s CEO, said in a release. “This puts us one step further to realizing the type of waste diversion and recycling experienced in hundreds of advanced waste processing plants in Europe, a solution that the United States has been slow to adopt. Maine has long held a special respect for its environment, and the state is leading the way in environmentally beneficial solid waste management with its approval of our permits.”

Over 100 communities in Maine will have their waste converted into biofuels at the Hampden facility. In a release announcing the permit issuance, Fiberight said that it will wrap up the project’s engineering and financing by the end of the summer, with construction expected to run through 2017.

According to Stuart-Paul, the Hampden facility is expected to come online well before the initial deadline set of April 2018.
