Oxford Aviation considers BNAS

Aircraft refurbishment company Oxford Aviation could relocate to the Brunswick Naval Air Station once it is closed in 2011, according to U.K.-based trade publication Flight Daily News.

Flight Daily News on Tuesday reported on its website that officials from the Oxford-based company expressed interest in relocating to the base while at the National Business Aviation Association annual conference in Orlando, Fla. But neither Oxford Aviation nor the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority, which is charged with planning the reuse of the base, would confirm Oxford's consideration of BNAS. However, John Richardson, commissioner of the Maine Department of Economic and Community Development, told The Times Record yesterday that "Oxord has approached MRRA, and has shown interest in the reuse of the base."

Reached by phone today, Jeffrey Jordan, deputy director of MRRA, referred calls regarding Oxford Aviation to the agency's executive director, Steven Levesque. Representatives from Oxford Aviation said the company plans to release a press release in the next 24 to 48 hours, but would not specify the subject of the release.

BNAS already has a handful of confirmed tenants that will receive either land or buildings when the base is closed: Bowdoin College, Southern Maine Community College, child care organization Family Focus, the town of Brunswick and the Brunswick police station, according to Jordan. Also, Embry Riddle Aeronautical University has announced its plans to establish a permanent location at BNAS.
