Oxford Aviation to create 200+ jobs

Story revised on Oct. 10, 2008

Oxford Aviation announced this afternoon that it plans to expand its operations into the Brunswick Naval Air Station, a move that could create 200 jobs in its first year.

The Oxford-based aircraft refurbishment company said it has entered into a letter agreement with the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority to locate in the base's hangar space and use its two 8,000-foot runways, according to a press release. The company plans to increase its workforce from 68 to 200 during its first year of operation, with the potential of adding another 300 jobs in a few years. The expansion will be the company's largest since it was founded 21 years ago.

The company "has had to turn away millions of dollars worth of contracts" because its current runway in Oxford, 3,000 ft. in length, is not long enough to land large planes, according to the release. The space at BNAS will allow Oxford to expand into the large aircraft refurbishment market. Oxford Aviation is also working to attract other aviation businesses to the base once it closes in 2011, according to the release.

This announcement follows a recent disappointment for the company when its plans for a major expansion at Sanford Regional Airport fell through after its financial backer, Boston-based Oso LLC, backed off. Oxford Aviation had announced its high-profile $10 million project in Sanford two years ago, promising it would open a 96,000-square-foot airplane-refurbishing facility and employ up to 200 people.
