Oxford Casino opens its doors

The Oxford Casino yesterday opened its doors, first with an invitation-only preview and then to the public. The owners, management and staff held a ribbon-cutting and reception before opening to the public at 6 p.m.

The 17,000-square-foot casino has more than 500 slot machines and a dozen table games, and will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to the Sun Journal. It has about 400 employees, 95% of whom are from Maine, according to management. The casino will eventually become a four-season resort that includes a hotel. An expansion to the gaming floor is already under construction.

Investors in the project include Robert and Gary Bahre, the former owners of the Oxford Plains Speedway and the New Hampshire International Speedway; New York firm Och-Ziff Real Estate Advisors; Rob Lally, co-owner of Mt. Abram ski resort in Greenwood; and Steve Barber, former president and CEO of Barber Foods. In September Black Bear Development picked Las Vegas-based Silverton Casino to support development and operations.
