Oxford selectmen have authorized Town Manager Michael Chammings to negotiate the sale of a former woolen mill on Thompson Lake to developer Chuck Starbird, who has restored a mill in downtown Mechanic Falls.
The Lewiston Sun Journal reported that the former Robinson Mill property, which the town took over in 2009 for nonpayment of almost $245,000 in property taxes, had been eyed by former owner John Robinson for redevelopment as a mixed-use complex with residential condominiums, commercial space, restaurants and a textile museum.
The newspaper reported that the town would retain control of the adjacent waterway and a dam that controls the water level of the lake.
Last fall, the town turned over the property to the nonprofit Oxford Economic Community Action Agency, which applied for a Community Development Block Grant to begin repairs to the woolen mill. The agency failed to get the grant and the newspaper reported that the town manager will be working with the group to have the property transferred back to the town to facilitate its sale to a private developer.
