A new political action committee has formed to repeal the new tax reform law.
Led by Sen. David Trahan (R- Waldoboro), the PAC is calling itself "Still Fed Up With Taxes," a takeoff of the people's veto campaign that successfully appealed a beverage tax levied to fund Dirigo Health, according to the Kennebec Journal. Trahan told the paper he did not support "how quickly this went through the Legislature," as well as the law's broadening of the 5% sales tax to new goods and services. The coalition will have a month gather 55,087 signatures needed for to get the question on the November ballot, or until mid-September to get the question on the June 2010 ballot, which would delay implementation of the law, currently slated to take effect January 2010.
Other Senate and House leaders, including Senate Minority Leader Kevin Raye (R-Perry), have already applied for a people's veto with the Secretary of State's office, which has until July 2 to write a question that can be circulated for signatures, according to the paper.
