Palesky barred from preparing tax returns

A federal judge in Portland last week permanently barred Carol Palesky from ever preparing or filing federal tax returns for others.

Palesky, known for leading a citizens' initiative in 2004 to cap property taxes in the state, is accused of preparing federal income tax returns claiming inflated deductions and credits for customers of her Topsham-based business East Accounting Services, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The court ordered Palesky to mail a copy of the injunction to all her clients and provide the government with a list of names, addresses, e-mail addresses, telephone numbers and social security numbers for everyone she prepared tax returns for between 2003 and 2005.
