People's veto on tax reform moves ahead

The proposed people's veto of the tax reform bill is moving forward now that the secretary of state's office has released the question that would show up on the ballot.

If the Maine GOP is successful in securing 55,087 signatures, voters will face this question on a future ballot: "Do you want to reject the new law that lowers Maine's income tax and replaces that revenue by making changes to the sales tax?"

Charles Webster, chairman of the Maine GOP, told the Kennebec Journal that signatures will be collected as quickly as possible, but the party may want the question on the June 2010 ballot rather than this November to give it more time for fundraising.

Gov. John Baldacci on June 12 signed LD 1495 into law. The law decreases Maine's income tax rate from 8.5% to 6.5% for those making under $250,000, increases the meals and lodging tax from 7% to 8.5% and expands Maine's 5% sales tax to more goods and services.
