Peter Mills to lead turnpike authority

Former state Sen. Peter Mills has been tapped to temporarily lead the Maine Turnpike Authority, after longtime executive director Paul Violette stepped down earlier this month.

The authority's board yesterday unanimously endorsed Mills to serve as interim executive director, according to a press release from Gov. Paul LePage's office. "We all know Sen. Mills has the integrity, experience and commitment to public service needed to restore trust and confidence in the turnpike authority," LePage said in the release. During his 16 years in the Legislature, Mills served as a Republican leader on tax, labor, judiciary and appropriations committees, according to his website, and he ran for governor in 2010.

Violette, who ran MTA for 23 years, resigned March 7 amid controversy over the authority's spending habits.
