PFAS levels prompt environmental warnings near Brunswick Landing

The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention advises against eating freshwater fish caught near Brunswick's former naval air station — now the Brunswick Landing business park — because of elevated PFAS levels.

The announcement comes shortly after the accidental release of PFAS-containing fire-fighting foam at the air strip on Aug. 19. But on Friday the center said its recommendation was based on test findings prior to that spill.

The CDC said the new advisories are based on data collected in October 2023, when fish were sampled. The data was shared with state health officials this past spring. The CDC detected elevated levels of PFAS from the data and said the most recent environmental accident is not expected to change its advisory.

The advisory recommended either no consumption or limited consumption of fish from four bodies of water in the area.

The CDC said the public should avoid eating fish from Picnic Pond, Site 8 Stream and Merriconeag Stream. The CDC also warned not to eat fish from the section of Mere Brook on the eastern side of the runway and to limit consumption of fish from the western side of Mere Brook.

Due to the recent foam that has appeared on some of these bodies of water, the center also recommended that the public avoid recreational activities there, such as swimming and boating, that could involve contact.
