Pharmacy robberies drive Rite-Aid to hire help

Rite Aid pharmacies in the Bangor area have hired security staff to address an increasing number of pharmacy robberies, according to the Bangor Daily News.

State drug enforcement officials told the paper that Maine has averaged just over one pharmacy robbery a week this year — 54 in total so far — which more than doubles the robberies reported in 2011.

Roy McKinney, director of the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, told the paper that pharmacy operators around the state are taking steps to deter robberies, including hiring security staff.

A Rite-Aid spokeswoman told the paper that the company, which has 60 locations in the state, is evaluating the situation with local police.
