After six years of work, Briar Fishman and her husband, Phish drummer Jon Fishman, completed the renovation of a three-story building at 269 Main St. in Lincolnville and have reopened it as a general store.
“We want to have a place where food, politics, agriculture and community can all happen,” manager Ladleah Dunn told the Bangor Daily News.
The Lincolnville Center General Store had its grand opening in late October, an event featuring live music by local groups the Mallett Brothers and the Route 17 Ramblers, with Fishman joining both as a special guest performer, according to Live For Music.com.
The rehab included cleaning up contaminated soil from old gas pumps, removing asbestos in the basement, and installation of a custom industrial kitchen, hot bar and wood-fired oven. The store is showcasing exotic to-go food like goat korma, an Indian curry dish, and is leveraging the meal-kit concept.
“We are taking the work out of cooking,” Briar Fishman told the BDN.
The store, which was built in the mid-19th century and features an outdoor porch, has been closed for almost a decade. Live For Music.com reported that the Fishmans plan to work with local businesses to minimize duplication of services and are planning on adding groceries and delivery services for elderly and disabled Lincolnville residents.
So far, the store has 15 full- and part-time employees.
