Picking up Pickering: Bangor square revitalization on tap

FILE PHOTO / DAVE CLOUGH Tanya Emery, director of the Bangor Community and Economic Development Department, says her primary focus is to create jobs in “high-value-added industries.”

Revitalization of downtown Bangor and the city’s waterfront continues, with city officials considering redevelopment of Pickering Square, a block from the waterfront.

The ongoing west side rehabilitation, which includes demolition of several properties and infrastructure improvements, should be finished by August 2017, according to Community and Economic Development Director Tanya Emery, the Bangor Daily News reported.

Waterfront improvements could include replacing docks and creating more mooring and docking space, as well as a possible skatepark and other recreational amenities.

Pickering Square, on the south end of the downtown, includes restaurants, retail and the Maine Discovery Museum. The square also has a parking garage.

New commercial activity in recent years includes the addition of the Boston-based online home furnishings retailer Wayfair and its 450 jobs, downtown retailers such as Evenrood's Restaurant, the Designs by Aaron jewelry store, West Market Square Artisan Coffeehouse, the steakhouse Brahma Grill and Explore Bangor, which rents bikes and boats. A number of historic buildings have been converted to residential or mixed use.
