Pierce Atwood LLP has named new leadership for patent and litigation practices; both bring years of experience in all aspects of law.
Ilan Barzilay has been named chair of the patent practice group. He specializes in obtaining and enforcing patent rights and has experience in all aspects of intellectual property law, including portfolio management, opinions, licensing, trademarks and copyrights.
Barzilay has led a team that acquires patents for clients ranging from technology startups and research institutions to established companies and multinational corporations. He received his Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center and his bachelor of science in electrical engineering from Cornell University.
"Our patent attorneys work with companies and researchers on fascinating new technologies being developed not only in Maine and New England but also across the country and the globe," said Barzilay. "I'm looking forward to leading the group in building our clients' portfolios in face of constantly evolving patent laws."
Gavin McCarthy has been named chair of the litigation practice group. McCarthy is a trial lawyer with decades of experience handling disputes across the country. His practice includes class action defense, representing businesses in complex commercial disputes, and construction litigation.
"Pierce Atwood has an extraordinarily talented group of trial lawyers that for years have been delivering practical solutions when possible and hard-fought wins when necessary," said McCarthy. "I'm very much looking forward to supporting this amazing group of lawyers as they continue to deliver terrific results for our clients at the negotiation table, in the courtroom, and beyond."
McCarthy was recognized by Chambers USA as a leading commercial litigator and was named Best Lawyers 2022 "Lawyer of the Year" for construction litigation in Maine. He received his Juris Doctor from Boston College Law School and his bachelor of arts from Haverford College.
"Ilan and Gavin are both outstanding lawyers who will provide effective and innovative leadership for two of our strongest and deepest practices," said Pierce Atwood Managing Partner David E. Barry. "They have achieved significant success and recognition in their respective practices and, equally important in their new leadership roles, have demonstrated extraordinary knowledge, judgment and a commitment to providing firm clients with the guidance and responsiveness they deserve and expect. Their talents and skills make them each an ideal choice to lead their team of skilled attorneys and other professionals."
Pierce Atwood LLP is a full-service law firm based in New England. The firm is ranked No. 3 on the recently published 2023 Mainebiz Book of Lists and has 135 attorneys in Maine.
