Pittsfield trailer manufacturer Nitro continues to expand

Peter Van Allen Nitro Trailers, a Pittsfield manufacturer, continues to expand and is now in 40,000 square feet between two industrial buildings.

Nitro Trailers, a Pittsfield manufacturer, continues to grow. The maker of aluminum trailers has in 10 years gone from a garage to 4,000 square feet to 20,000 square feet and, more recently, to 40,000 square feet. But that still isn't enough space.

Now, owner Chad Dow told Mainebiz, there are plans in the works to expand by another 70,000 square feet.

Nitro is also expanding its workforce. The company has more than 60 employees and plans to add another 10 to 15.

The business, which was founded in 2013, has already outgrown space in the Pittsfield Industrial Park.

On a visit this week, Operations Manager Ben Brower offered a tour. Every square foot of the current space was being used for staging the trailers, cutting aluminum, storage, welding, or machining. Part of the space was being carved out for additional offices to house the sales and administrative teams.

"We're looking at responsible, sustainable growth," Dow said.

Having said that, demand for trailers has soared and Dow said the company is at full capacity trying to get products to its dealer network in the Northeast.

End-users are typically contractors, landscaping crews and recreational snowmobilers and ATV riders. There are also trailers to transport cars.

For now, the company has roughly 40,000 square feet tied up in two large buildings in the industrial park. They're far enough apart, though, that workers have to drive between the two sites.

Future expansion

Dow, who has worked in the trailer business since he was 17, said the company owns 18 acres in the business park. For over a year it has had plans to add 70,000 square feet on an open space that now houses finished trailer inventory.

A year ago, it was on verge of starting the project when contractor J.M. Brown, of Bangor, said the war in Ukraine was quickly driving up the price of steel.

"We pumped the brakes" during the worst of the price increases, Dow said, but he's now in the process of finalizing the plan.

Great article...I wish Nitro all the best...their trailers are top quality and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly! I wish they would open a location further south!
