PMA hires new fundraising chief

The Portland Museum of Art has hired a new lead fundraiser who comes to the position from the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Mass.

The museum announced in a press release that Elizabeth Cartland will in February start as the nonprofit's new director of development, a position that oversees the museum's fundraising staff, its major gifts program and its annual leadership giving programs.

Before her work overseeing a $2 million annual giving program at the Peabody Essex Museum, Cartland served as the senior development officer for major gifts at Joslin Diabetes Center and was before that the development officer for patron programs at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

This year, the museum broke a 10-year attendance record, which museum officials attributed to the opening of its new Winslow Homer studio exhibit on Prout's Neck and a museum exhibit of the artist's work that ran from September to December.
