Poland Spring, the Maine-based subsidiary of Nestlé Waters North America, is launching an Instagram hotline to help consumers recycle more empty plastic bottles and other waste.
The water bottler said in a news release that it’s teaming with the Recycling Partnership, a national nonprofit group, to operate the hotline, which will address common questions such as “Can I recycle this?”
Consumers can post a photo of the item in question on their Instagram feed or in their stories, tagging #NotTrash and @PolandSpringWtr to ask for help. Poland Spring and The Recycling Partnership say they will respond with an answer.
In addition, Poland Spring is donating $150,000 to the partnership to assist with its efforts to improve curbside recycling.
Less than 30% of plastic bottles are currently recycled in the U.S., and less than half of recyclables in U.S. homes get recycled by consumers, according to the release.
The initiative comes as some Maine communities reconsider their municipal recycling programs. Last week, Kevin Roche, CEO of ecomaine, urged cities and towns not to give up on recycling.
“In the very short term, recycling may be more expensive today, but we know that over time, landfilling is far more expensive,” he said in a meeting of municipal officials.
