Portland, Bangor lag behind national economy

The metropolitan areas of Portland, Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn were way behind the nation in economic growth for 2013, according to new federal figures.

A new report from the Bureau of Economic Analysis shows that the Portland metropolitan area’s total value of goods and services grew by only 0.7% last year, far lower than the nation’s average of 1.7%, the Portland Press Herald reported. The total value of goods and services for the Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn areas each grew by only 0.1%.

The gross domestic product for Portland in 2013 was $27.5 billion, making it the 88th largest metropolitan economy in the country. Bangor’s GDP was $5.7 billion, with the 270th largest in the country, and Lewiston-Auburn’s was $4 billion, with the 339th largest in the country.
