Portland Buy Local has hired Mary Alice Scott as the organization's new executive director.
Scott is a Portland-based organizer who worked most recently as the community engagement manager at the Portland Food Co-op, where she played a key role in developing educational programming, raising over $1 million in start-up funds prior to the co-op’s opening and increasing membership by over 400% in less than a year.
Other experience includes working with Creative Trails and the Maine League of Young Voters. Scott has a passion for building community and is excited to support the hundreds of locally owned businesses in Portland. She holds a degree in government from Franklin and Marshall College.
“We are thrilled to welcome Mary Alice,” said Portland Buy Local Board President Heather Caston-Talbot. “Our board is dedicated to supporting Portland’s incredible independently owned businesses, and we’ve found the perfect match in Mary Alice. Her experience and devotion to the community will make her a valuable asset to our team.”
In this position, Scott will play a critical role within the Portland Buy Local group. She will represent Portland Buy Local both nationally and globally, spearhead the growth of the organization and work closely with its board of directors on day-to-day projects as well as larger annual events. Scott begins her new role on Sept. 19.
Scott replaces Jenn Thompson, who is relocating with her family to Indiana. Thompson will remain on the board of the American Independent Business Alliance and will stay involved with Portland Buy Local remotely as an advisory board member.
Portland Buy Local is the campaign of the Portland Independent Business and Community Alliance. With nearly 500 business, nonprofit, and individual members, its mission is to support locally owned, independent businesses in Portland to maintain the community’s unique character, provide continuous opportunities for entrepreneurs, build community economic strength, and prevent the displacement of community-based businesses by national and global chains.
