Portland Buy Local, which began nearly two decades ago as an advocacy group championing small businesses in the city, has eliminated fees for listings in a local business directory and will now offer educational services for free.
In a press release Friday, Portland Buy Local said the changes are part of its reorganization, transitioning from a membership-based organization to an educational nonprofit.
“The pandemic hit the organization hard,” said Amy Landry, Portland Buy Local board president. “It was on the verge of closure, so a few of us on the board decided to take a step back to figure out where it fit and reimagine its future.”
The organization’s activities will focus on providing free resources for locally owned, independent businesses, running campaigns to inspire consumers to choose local first, and creating opportunities to build relationships between local businesses and the community.
The organization has already begun offering free education, including its IndieBiz Edu series. Portland Buy Local is also in the early stages of planning an annual day-long summit to provide in-depth educational opportunities for the local small business community.
In addition, the group is seeking funds to build a new online platform for its educational content and to create an online business directory to help consumers find local businesses.
