Portland consultancy, Canadian firm embark on joint venture

Six months after making its first acquisition, Portland consulting firm Readiness Associates is embarking on a joint venture with a Canada-based cloud technology service provider.

Readiness Associates, led by CEO and founder Michael Boardman since 2015, focuses on business continuity and emergency preparedness for the health sector.

Boardman told Mainebiz the company currently employs 11 people part- and full-time and is building a board of advisors for greater leadership and oversight.

The new joint venture announced on Friday is with CloudOak of Oakville in Ontario, Canada. The new partner provides cloud-based business process automation and business continuity planning for small and medium-size enterprises.

"In 2021, we’re expecting tremendous growth from this partnership alone, not including additional strategic relationships we already have in place," Boardman told Mainebiz.

He also said that while CloudOak has clients and partners throughout North America and is growing quickly in Europe, it is not customer-facing, which is where his company company comes in.

What that means, he said, is that Readiness Associates serves as an onsite or virtual partner to ensure companies keep their doors open and their employees and customers safe.

Put another way, "CloudOak offers the software," he said. "Readiness Associates directly engages with all customers."

'Building further alignment'

Asked why a joint venture is more attractive than a merger or acquisition, Boardman said, "This is a new collaboration for both companies, so we're focused on building further alignment, trust, and of course revenue. We also need to evaluate the pros and cons of CloudOak being Canadian-based and our group here in Maine."

The move comes six months after Readiness Associates acquired Continuity Dynamics Inc., a Basking Ridge, N.J.-based disaster-recovery firm, for an undisclosed amount. At that time Readiness Associates had a team of eight employees.

Toward the end of this year, the enlarged entity will operate under the name Readiness Associates powered by Continuity Dynamics.
