Portland eateries face another smoking ban

Portland city councilors yesterday voted 7-2 to ban smoking in outdoor dining areas before 10 p.m., the latest rule in a string of anti-smoking restrictions.

The ban will affect more than 60 restaurants and bars in the city that have outdoor dining areas, and will levy a fine of as much as $100, according to the Portland Press Herald. Some bar owners protested the ban, saying it would be ineffective because it does not set a minimum distance between smokers and outdoor areas.

Councilors in August banned smoking within 20 feet of all public beaches, playground and athletic facilities. This new ban goes into effect Oct. 3.
