As real estate development, new businesses and long-established marine industries bring more traffic to Portland’s Commercial Street, the city is looking for input on potential approaches to managing the hustle and bustle.

City planners, working with the Portland Area Comprehensive Transportation System and the Maine Department of Transportation, will discuss development of a master plan for Commercial Street at a public meeting Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 6 p.m., in the Rines Auditorium of Portland Public Library, 5 Monument Square.

According to a news release, the meeting will focus on three goals for Commercial Street: improving motorist travel time and reliability; enhancing marine operations and access to piers and wharves; and improving access for bus traffic, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Strategic concepts for achieving the goals will be presented, along with benefits and trade-offs. There will also be discussion about ways of improving safety, accommodating deliveries and managing on-street parking.

The city said final recommendations for a Commercial Street master plan will include a combination of the best strategies.

The meeting will begin with an open house and review of exhibits. The main discussion is slated to begin at 6:30.
