The Portland metro area is one of the country’s 10 most popular spots for business startups.
The area ranked No. 7 among large metros, and No. 36 overall, in a per-capita analysis of new businesses formed in 353 U.S. urban regions. The study was conducted by AdvisorSmith Solutions, a New York-based business insurance consultant, and released this week.
Based on U.S. Census population data and estimates of businesses opened in recent months, the Portland-South Portland region recorded 2.99 new businesses per 1,000 population. That was about 30% higher than the national average.
The No. 7 ranking put the Portland area just behind Sarasota, Fla., and ahead of Denver. Miami ranked No. 1 among large metro areas — defined as those with a population greater than 500,000.
Portland was also the only East Coast region to place among the top 10 large metro areas.
Among the top 50 startup spots of any size, there were only five Eastern metros. Bangor ranked No. 48 overall.
