Portland Pie Co., which has six locations in Maine and one in New Hampshire, is headed next to the Queen City.
The Portland-based company, which calls itself Maine’s original craft pizzeria and pub, announced Thursday that it will open a location in early June at 91 Main St. in downtown Bangor, the former location of Verve Burritos.
“We’re always being asked when we are coming to this town or that town and we are continually and actively exploring those options,” said Jeff Perkins, Portland Pie’s owner and CEO, in a news release. “For us, opening a new location in Bangor is such a great opportunity to become part of a strong community, which is what we are all about.”
He added that the Bangor location fits in well with the company’s goal of supporting downtown redevelopment. Downtown Waterville’s redevelopment on Main Street includes a Portland Pie store, which is frequented by Colby College students who live across the street at the new Alfond Commons.
In addition to its flavored dough, specialty gourmet pizza and food menu that includes sandwiches and salads, Portland Pie is a strong supporter of Maine’s craft beer industry.
“Craft pizza, craft beer — is there really anything better?” Perkins said. “It’s such a natural fit and we’re proud to work with many of the breweries in Maine, be it on our rotating tap lines or our exclusive beer collaborations that we do throughout the year.”
Tanya Emery, Bangor’s director of community and economic development, told Mainebiz that the city is happy to welcome Portland Pie to downtown Bangor.
“They have a well-established brand which already has many fans in this area, and they will be a tremendous addition to our food scene,” she added. “The strength of downtown Bangor continues to attract businesses from near and far, which is a great sign for our city.”
Portland Pie said its Bangor location will follow the design of its existing locations, offering guests a pub atmosphere with a full bar as well as a family-friendly dine-in experience. It will also provide take-out, delivery and catering services.
Founded in 1997 out of a small shop in Portland, Portland Pie has locations in Biddeford, Brunswick, Portland, Scarborough, Waterville and Westbrook, as well as Manchester, N.H.
