A plan to build a $105 million event center on Thompson's Point in Portland last night received unanimous approval from the city's planning board. Board members voted 4-0, giving final approval to The Forefront at Thompson's Point, which will include a hotel, restaurant, office space and a 4,800-seat event center.
The center would be built on about 30 acres near the Portland Transportation Center, which is home to the Downeaster train station and the Concord Trailways bus terminal, according to the Portland Press Herald. Christopher Thompson, one of the partners in Thompon's Point Development Co., said the project still needs a building permit from the city and a permit from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection; it's already received preliminary approval from the Maine Department of Transportation.
Jon Jennings and William Ryan Jr., two owners of the Maine Red Claws basketball team, pitched the hotel and event center last spring. The arena would host Red Claws games, as well as other sporting events and conventions. So far, the developers haven't named possible tenants. Last June, the city approved a $31 million tax break for the project.
