Charterhouse Development Corp., a Boston real estate company, has hired a Connecticut architectural firm to update the Union Station Plaza shopping center in Portland.
Union Station Plaza is a 110,000 square-foot shopping center at 240-280 St. John St., not far from Maine Medical Center, Hadlock Field and the Denny’s restaurant. Tenants include Maine Hardware, Sav-A-Lot, Dollar General and Buckdancer’s Choice Music.
Capital improvements will include “reimagined” façades, storefronts, tenant signs, pylon sign and parking lot re-grading.
The company did not say how much it will invest in the makeover.
“We are thrilled to reintroduce Union Station Plaza to the Portland market and look forward to working with this esteemed design firm,” said Meredith Roy, president of Charterhouse Development Corp. “Through our extensive capital improvement program, we are confident Union Station Plaza will be aesthetically redeveloped and further prominently positioned as a convenient, popular shopping destination for the surrounding neighborhoods.”
Charterhouse hired Simsbury, Conn.-based Phase Zero Design to lead the redesign.
“The design concepts for the new facades and parking lot of Union Station Plaza will create an appealing entry to the neighborhood by providing a more architecturally modern passage for both tenants and visitors alike,” said Shawn Bland, associate principal at Phase Zero Design. “We believe the quality of the shopping environment for all present and future tenants will be greatly enhanced in the reimagined Union Station Plaza.”
“This redevelopment project fits nicely with our strategy of creating value by repositioning older, well-located shopping centers to better serve the surrounding community and thereby provide a ‘sense of place’ where the community will want to spend their time” said Brandt Sharrock, vice president at Charterhouse Development Corp.
According to Charterhouse Development’s website, it also owns 485 Main St. in Saco and 924 Post Road, in Wells, which is anchored by a CVS store.
Gendron Commercial Brokers is the exclusive leasing agent for Union Station Plaza.
