Portland social services agencies merge

After mulling it for months, two Portland-based nonprofit agencies focusing on social services have approved a merger.

The boards of trustees of the People's Regional Opportunity Program of Cumberland County and Youth Alternatives Ingraham last week voted to merge, according to a press release. The merger will allow the organizations to share resources and "be more proactive and efficient in developing community solutions," including support in health care, housing, child care, early education, mental health and nutrition. The merger will be completed Oct. 1, and Michael Tarpinian, president of Youth Alternatives Ingraham, will be CEO of the new organization. A new name will be announced in September.

In March, organization officials told Mainebiz a combined group would have a budget of between $36 million and $37 million. PROP has about 200 employees, while Youth Alternatives Ingraham has a full-time staff of 260.
