Portland ties for top volunteer ranking in U.S.
Portland is tied with three cities at No. 1 out of 70 in the U.S. ranked by annual volunteer hours per resident, according to the personal finance website WalletHub.
Maine’s largest city holds the top spot in a tie with Salt Lake City, Utah, San Diego, Calif., and Chula Vista, Calif., while Providence, R.I., fared the worst.
Portland was found to have 49.39 annual volunteer hours per resident, fewer than the other three but enough to share the top spot.
That tally figured into a larger compilation of the 116 hardest-working U.S. cities, which places Portland at No. 58. San Francisco leads the way, followed by Fremont, Calif., and Jersey City, N.J., while Columbia, S.C., is dead last.
“Most Americans view hard work as the path to achieving the American dream,” WalletHub said. “We work so hard, in fact, that we put in more hours at our jobs than several other industrialized countries such as Germany, Japan and the U.K.”
Ranks were calculated from a combination of factors, including direct ones such as hours in the average work week and workers leaving vacation time unused, as well as indirect factors such as average commute times and leisure time.
Portland ranks No. 3 in terms of the share of workers with multiple jobs and No. 7 for the share of engaged workers, defined by Gallup as “employees who are involved in, enthusiastic about, and committed to their work and workplace.”
