The operator of the Nova Star cruise ship has not applied for federal permits to sell tickets for its ferry service set to begin May 1, though company officials said they won’t be hampered by a 60-day permitting deadline.
The Portland Press Herald reported Dennis Bailey, a spokesman for the ferry operator, said the company was told by the U.S. Federal Maritime Commission that its application will be fast-tracked for approval and that the commission has reviewed a draft application. The commission requires the ferry operator to prove it has the financial ability to refund customers’ money if trips are canceled and also provide details of its liability coverage for the death or injury of passengers.
A spokeswoman for the commission declined to say whether Nova Star Cruises’ application would be expedited, but said many applications are processed in under 60 days. The company plans for its ship to depart from Singapore later this month and arrive in Boston in April for christening and the installation of table games and 70 slot machines.
