A plan to transform a 10-acre Portland waterfront property into a mixed-use development could be stymied by a preservation group's bid to give the land greater protection.
The Portland Press Herald reported that Greater Portland Landmarks has asked the Portland Historic Preservation Board to declare the Portland Co. site at 58 Fore St. as a historic district. The request comes after developer CPB2 filed a request with the city to rezone the property from a special industrial zone to a mixed-use zone.
CBP2 principal Casey Prentice told the newspaper that the move could threaten redevelopment efforts there, noting that he planned to seek historic protection for individual buildings instead. He has said that his company seeks to incorporate the “look and feel” of the Old Port into the property.
A study by Sutherland Conservation and Consulting said the Portland Co. site has historic significance on a national level because it’s possibly the first site in the United States where the entire process of manufacturing railroad equipment occurred within one complex. The study said it’s also likely the only manufacturing plant left in the country that constructed locomotives for the Union during the Civil War.
