Portland's Plum Creek hearing largest yet

Hundreds of people gathered in Portland Saturday for a public hearing on Plum Creek's development proposal for the Moosehead Lake area.

The all-day event at Holiday Inn by the Bay was so far the largest of the three hearings on the proposal before the Land Use Regulation Commission, which will decide whether or not to rezone more than 400,000 acres to allow Seattle-based Plum Creek Timber Co. to build almost 1,000 house lots and two resorts. Roughly 500 people attended the Saturday hearing, with opponents outnumbering supporters, according to the Portland Press Herald. While supporters say the proposal would boost the region's economy, opponents say the plan should be denied, or at least scaled back, because it could harm the environment.

Another hearing was scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 16, at Greenville High School, but it was postponed until Jan. 19 because of yesterday's snowstorm.
