Two Northeast music promoters have announced plans to reopen Portland's 80-year-old State Theatre on Congress Street this fall.
The Bowery Presents, a New York-based music company, and Higher Ground Presents, a music promotion firm and concert venue in South Burlington, Vt., will operate the State Theatre as equal partners and have signed a long-term lease with the theater's owner, Stone Coast Properties, according to the Portland Press Herald. The theater located at 609 Congress St. in the city's arts district has been closed since 2006, and Stone Coast has spent $700,000 to renovate the property. When completed, the theater will seat up to 1,450 people, slightly fewer than Merrill Auditorium's 1,800 seats.
Lauren Wayne, a Portland music industry insider who also books events for the Port City Music Hall, will run the theater as general manager and handle booking and promotion for the venue's concerts. Wayne told the newspaper she plans to book about 80 concerts a year at the State Theatre.
