Presque Isle offered 2016 Biathlon World Cup

US Biathlon has asked the Nordic Heritage Center in Presque Isle and the Maine Winter Sports Center to host an event for the 2016 World Cup, which organizers say provides an economic boost to the region.

Andy Shepard, president of the Maine Winter Sports Center, said in a press release that the events “are critical to the economic development mission of the Maine Winter Sports Center” and provide tourism opportunities for the state’s northernmost county.

Jane Towle, the event director for the 2014 International Biathlon Union’s junior championship event in Presque Isle, said in a prepared statement that she plans to reach out to area service-industry businesses in crafting a plan for hosting the 2016 event.

The international biathlon organization has also asked Canmore, Alberta, which hosted events during the 1988 Winter Olympics, to host a biathlon event in 2016. Presque Isle previously hosted a World Cup biathlon in 2011.
