Propane use makes gains on heating oil

The number of Maine homes using propane for heat has grown 24% in the past five years as people turn away from increasingly costly heating oil.

The Associated Press reported that 41,000 homes used propane in 2012, up from 33,000 five years earlier according to the latest U.S. Census Bureau tally. During the same period, the percentage of Maine home using heating oil declined from 75% to less than 69%.

The Portland Press Herald reported that energy experts at a forum last week projected the switch away from heating oil would continue in the coming years as the number and availability of alternatives like natural gas continues to grow.
