Proposed Portland cold storage needs height allowance

The Port Authority of Maine’s plans for a 120,000-square-foot cold storage facility on the western waterfront will be presented in a workshop with the Portland Planning Board Tuesday.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the $30 million project would require a zoning change since the proposal calls for a warehouse building that would exceed the city’s current height limit of 45 feet by nearly another 23 feet.

In 2015, the Maine Department of Transportation chose Americold, considered the largest cold storage company in the world and based in Atlanta, over one other bidder to build and operate refrigerated storage facility at Portland's International Marine Terminal, where Icelandic container shipping company Eimskip operates.

Now the Port Authority of Maine has submitted concept renderings for the 120,000-square-foot facility to the City of Portland, Maine Public Radio reported. The facility, to be built by Americold, would be located on land owned by the Port Authority of Maine and would expand capacity for refrigerated and frozen products for Eimskip and other freight companies.

The proposed facility will allow Portland to compete more effectively against Boston in the cold storage market.
