PUC Chairman Tom Welch to retire early

Tom Welch, chairman of the Maine Public Utilities Commission, announced Wednesday that he plans to retire Dec. 31, which is two years before his term was set to expire in 2017.

“I’m just turning 65, so there’s some significance to that,” he told the Bangor Daily News.

Welch had served as chairman of the PUC from 1993 to 2005 and was appointed to his current term in April 2011.

Fellow PUC Commissioner David Littell’s term is set to expire in March, leaving whoever is elected governor in November’s election with two vacancies to fill on the three-member commission that regulates public utilities providing water, telephone, electricity and natural gas in Maine.
