PUC disappointed by court ruling

Mainers will not see any savings on electricity bills after a United States Appeals Court in Washington on Friday upheld temporary charges for regional power generators.

Maine's Public Utilities Commission and the Public Advocate had previously argued before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that there was no justification for the temporary price hike, which will cost Maine $300 million by 2010, according to a press release from the PUC.

The payment system, administered by ISO-New England, translates to a 10% increase for businesses and 7% jump for residents. Imposed in December 2006, the charges help subsidize the development of power plants in southern New England.
