PUC rejects new L-A transmission line

State utilities regulators have turned down Central Maine Power Co.'s request to build a new transmission line in the Lewiston-Auburn area, saying it's unnecessary.

The Maine Public Utilities Commission unanimously rejected CMP's bid for a 115-kilovolt transmission line known as the Lewiston Loop, saying the company did not make a compelling case for its necessity, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. "The utility has not shown to my satisfaction through comprehensive testing or analysis that construction of the Lewiston Loop project is the most cost-effective means of addressing power reliability needs in the Lewiston area," PUC Chair Jack Cashman said. Commissioners said that other upgrades could meet the area's power needs.

The transmission line was originally part of CMP's $1.4 billion Maine Power Reliability Project, which the PUC approved in July, but was taken out to be reviewed separately.
