PUC staff against ISO pull out

The staff at the Maine Public Utilities Commission says the state's electric utilities should negotiate for more favorable terms with the New England power grid rather than immediately pull out of the grid.

In recent years, concerns have mounted among policymakers that ISO New England's rules, policies and prices haven't been fair to Maine. Pulling out of the grid and going it alone or linking up with New Brunswick have been discussed as options, but the PUC staff recommends pressing ISO New England for reforms once Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. and Central Maine Powers' current agreements with ISO New England expire in February 2010, according to the Associated Press.

The full PUC will discuss the staff recommendation next week and report its recommendations to the Legislature by Jan. 15, the AP reported.
