Quimby expands land holdings

Roxanne Quimby has expanded her extensive footprint in northern Maine, purchasing another 11,291 acres near Baxter State Park for her land conservation foundation.

The tract, sold by timberland and development company Lakeville Shores Inc. to Quimby's nonprofit foundation, Elliotsville Plantation, is not part of the 70,000 acres Quimby wants to donate for a national park, according to the Bangor Daily News. But Quimby may use the land to win over snowmobilers and hunters, who have historically often opposed her plans. In a press release from the foundation, Quimby promises access to the land for motorized recreation and hunting, as well as for sustainable working forest purposes, for one year.

Quimby has also offered snowmobile clubs five years of access to trails on her property in exchange for their initial support of her national park proposal. Quimby has used some of her wealth from founding Burt's Bees, a natural beauty products company, to buy more than 110,000 acres of forests in Maine.
