Raw milk bill falls to veto

A bill to allow dairy farmers to sell raw milk on their property and at farmers’ markets died Tuesday after failing to secure the votes that would override a veto from Gov. Paul LePage.

The Bangor Daily News reported the bill would have exempted farmers who produce less than 20 gallons of raw milk a day from state licensing and inspection, requirements that the bill’s backers say place an undue burden on small farmers.

In his veto letter, the governor said he supports the concept of the bill but wants it to have stronger inspection requirements and not to allow raw milk sales at farmers’ markets.
