One of the most counter-intuitive trends of 2024 is the opening of new bookstores.
On Saturday, the Books-A-Million bookstore chain officially opened its new store in Bangor.
The store moved from its longtime two-story location at 116 Bangor Mall Blvd. to a new 27,900-square-foot site at 490 Stillwater Ave., which was formerly a branch of retailer Bed Bath and Beyond. The new bookstore, about a mile from its predecessor, is on one floor but slightly larger.
It will be open Mondays through Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
"This new Books-A-Million location is an exciting addition to the Bangor community," said Olivia McDaniel, vice president of marketing at Books-A-Million. "The space will not only offer a wide range of books but also serve as a community hub where neighbors can connect, explore, and enjoy themselves. We can’t wait to welcome both our loyal and new customers to their beautiful new Books-A-Million.”
In addition to a wide selection of books, the store will sell educational toys, games, and gifts. It will also have reading areas, a dedicated children's section, and a curated pen-to-paper shop with a selection of gifts, stationery and literary-themed merchandise.
There will also be special events, author signings and book clubs, the company said.
The chain’s opening at the new Bangor location comes after the South Portland branch unveiled renovations in mid-May. Books-A-Million also has a store in Auburn.
Books-A-Million, which began in 1917 as a street corner newsstand in Florence, Ala., is now a family-run business with over 200 locations nationwide.
