Recession specials | Some more Maine businesses are getting ever-more creative as the economic outlook gets ever-more dismal.

Some more Maine businesses are getting ever-more creative as the economic outlook gets ever-more dismal. Here’s just a few of the ways they’re trying to get you to consider spending some free time:

Two Maine inns are offering their versions of “procreation vacations,” the latest trend in the hospitality industry. The Beachmere Inn in Ogunquit features an “In the Mood for Baby” special, which includes dinner for two at a local restaurant, a romantic love song CD, and champagne and oysters. The final touch is a gift “for the newest addition to your family.” At the Kenniston Hill Inn Bed and Breakfast in Boothbay, the “Birds and the Bees Package” includes pumpkin soup and seamoss elixir, believed to boost fertility. The first two “success stories” earn a free night to return to the inn, which can be spent celebrating the new child, or making a second one.

The Camden Harbour Inn no longer offers its “Indulgence Romance Package” of champagne, chocolate-dipped strawberries, body frosting and erotic games, but it’s now featuring a “Girls Getaway Package.” The deal includes a five-course dinner, lobster picnic, massages and scrapbooking.

On a more down-to-earth note, the Center Theatre in Dover-Foxcroft is offering free movies through the summer to people who have lost their jobs. Passes are good for five movie admissions and additional passes may be requested. “Many of our movies are oriented towards families and we know that with times being so difficult being able to go see a movie could help, at least help for a couple hours,” Alan Bray, a theatre board member, said in a press release.
