Regional grid plan cites Maine project

A major electrical transmission upgrade in Maine is needed in order to keep the regional grid running reliably, according to a report from ISO New England.

ISO New England, the operator of most of Maine's bulk power system, on Friday released its 2009 Regional System Plan, which said Central Maine Power Co.'s Maine Power Reliability Program transmission upgrade project is needed to "meet reliability requirements and improve the economic performance of the system," as well as handle new wind energy developments, according to a press release. Other transmission projects needed are the Greater Springfield Reliability Project in Massachusetts and the Vermont Southern Loop Project. The report also found that the region will likely have enough capacity to meet electricity demand through 2018, and that growth in consumer demand for electricity is expected to slow. CMP in July 2008 first proposed its $1.4 billion transmission upgrade, which includes a new 345-kV transmission line from Orrington to New Hampshire.
